VRExplorer Quest Version v1.3

VRExplorer comes to standalone headsets: version 1.3 brings the full application to Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S and PICO 4, with no PC, the same tools and the same sessions as the PC VR version. On Meta Quest, get it from the Meta Horizon Store.

🥽 The full VRExplorer, with no PC

The application runs directly on the headset. No workstation, no cable, no setup: put the headset on and the session begins.

The terrain follows you anywhere, into a classroom, into a meeting or onto the site itself. Equipping a group no longer means one PC per headset, which changes what a whole class or team can do at once.

Available on Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S and PICO 4. A headset and an internet connection are all you need.

On Meta Quest 3 and 3S, install VRExplorer from the Meta Horizon Store, then sign in with your VRExplorer account. On PICO 4, contact us to get the application.

Menus, radial menu, hints shown on the controllers: everything sits exactly where it does in the PC VR version, and the tools are the ones you already know: measurements and drawings, solo or group teleportation, photo mode, documents and slides.

Standalone users join the same session as PC VR and on-screen users: same scene, same drawings, same voice. You can freely mix devices within a single group, and switch from one to the other with the same gestures.

👁️ Keep the real room in view

With passthrough mode, the headset shows your real surroundings, captured by its cameras, around the terrain. You can see the people around you, your desk, your notes: handy in a classroom or a meeting, when the session alternates between exploring the terrain and discussing it.

The mode is switched on from the Settings menu, on headsets that support it.

🎨 Colors for your drawings

Points, lines and polygons can now be given a color, chosen from a palette with a color picker. An easy way to tell apart several surveys, authors or themes on the same terrain at a glance.

🔗 Sign in by scanning a QR code

Typing a username and a password on a virtual keyboard is the least pleasant moment of a session, all the more so when several headsets have to be set up one after the other.

Version 1.3 opens another way: sign in to the platform on your computer, it shows a QR code, and the headset reads it with its camera. The session opens on your account, with nothing to type.

New features

  • Standalone application for Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S and PICO 4: no PC required
  • Shared sessions with PC VR and on-screen users (same scene, same drawings, same voice)
  • Color editing for points, lines and polygons (palette and color picker)
  • QR code sign-in: the headset reads a code shown by the platform and opens the session with nothing to type
  • PICO 4 controller support (calibrated menus, hints and lasers)
  • Passthrough mode: see the real room around the terrain, switchable in the settings on compatible headsets

Improvements

  • Menus, radial menu and controller hints placed exactly as in PC VR
  • Login: scrollable session list, faster keyboard, better hover feedback, assisted pointing
  • More responsive snap turn, pivoting around the head
  • Controller haptic feedback on the terrain interface
  • Stability: memory budgets for 3D Tiles, tuned for the headset

Fixes

  • List bullets in documents
  • Microphone name missing from the settings
  • Blurry position icons
  • JPEG textures of GLB models displayed incorrectly

VRExplorer VR Version 1.2 Major update

Version 1.2 modernizes the VR interface, reworks movement, enhances the field tools and fixes numerous bugs.

🎛️ Redesigned VR interface

There’s a new menu: the radial menu. It appears right under your hand and gives you one-gesture access to the tools, adapting to the context by offering the actions that are relevant at any given moment. You browse the entries with a flick of the wrist, and the option you point to is selected. The radial menu also remembers your 3 most recently used tools, keeping them within immediate reach.

The standard menus have also been reorganized. They can now be moved, resized, pinned and docked freely during the session. To enable this, simply tick the “Move menus & docks” option in the Settings menu.

One more addition: hints displayed directly on the controllers show what each button does, and update according to the current action to help you get started — without having to memorize the controls.

📐 Measurement and annotation tools

The drawing and measurement tools are now more precise. Point placement benefits from a new sensitivity setting for finer positioning, and ground snapping helps you achieve clean, accurate drawings.
Polygons now display their area, calculated automatically.

🧭 Navigation and teleportation

Teleportation now handles walls, ceilings and enclosed spaces, ensures you arrive at the correct scale, and applies a smooth transition.

Before you confirm, a sphere linked to the ground shows exactly where your head will be once you arrive: you can check your precise height and position before moving, so you never end up too low, against a wall or inside an object.

It offers two modes, identified by color. In solo (green), available to everyone, each person moves on their own over a short distance — for example, to take a closer look at a detail. In group (blue), reserved for the session leader, they move everyone to a new point at once — the main way to navigate, letting you guide all participants through the scene.

📷 Photo mode

A virtual camera appears in your hand: you can grab it and handle it like a real one. Its screen shows a real-time preview of what you’re about to capture. You choose the format (4:3, 16:9, 1:1…) and the orientation (landscape or portrait), and you can zoom with the joystick.

Your drawings and annotations show up in the shot, and you can show or hide the interface depending on the look you want. Pressing the trigger takes the photo, and all your shots are also uploaded to the server alongside your other session information.

New features

  • New user interface
  • Radial menu for quick access to tools and their settings, with haptic feedback
  • Movable and customizable menus (position and size remembered)
  • Photo mode (virtual camera: format, orientation, preview)
  • Control hints displayed on the controllers
  • Server history on the login screen (saved servers and quick switching)
  • Live notifications: teacher’s call and slide changes

Improvements

  • Reworked teleportation (solo/group, human scale, handling of walls/ceilings/corridors)
  • Measurement tools: polygons with area, point insertion, ground snapping, precision placement
  • Screenshots: better quality, automatic opening, pinning a view
  • Interface: new cursor and laser, sharper text, revised themes, haptic feedback on menus, virtual keyboard
  • Headsets & controllers: refined settings (Quest 3, Pico 4, Vive, Oculus)
  • Terrain & 3D models: DEM / 3D Tiles / point clouds / GLB, scenes without terrain, denser point clouds, model import, terrain repositioning
  • Faster zoom and better scaling; better-sized panel text
  • Performance: smoother loading (cache rewrite), fewer slowdowns
  • Settings: microphone selection and mute button; clock in the session menu

Fixes

  • Synchronization between groups and participant reconnection
  • 3D models that could disappear when joining a session
  • Solo teleportation: erratic behavior fixed; zoom calculation based on terrain precision
  • Display of GLB models and rendering of drawings/measurements; terrain cleanup when a slide has no terrain
  • Menus: focus passing through the terrain, flickering, resizing, display order, list scrolling
  • Button hover states (mic, photo, laser) and mirrored icons; measurements drawn over menus
  • Crashes when changing scene, connection leaks, microphone and related options
